In addition to exposing the fraud of certain American corporations in their quest to import foreign software and hardware labor using the false claim that there's a shortage in this country (some companies just don't want to pay Americans, they'd rather hire foreign imports and work them harder as a form of captive labor for five years until they earn their green cards - often deliberately delaying the process to extend the length of indentured servitude) in the software development field, Dr. Matloff also has a bitchin' little set of tutorial pages right at the level of college CS and professionals alike.

Dr. Matloff knows that there's no shortage of software and hardware engineers in this country, only a shortage of software and hardware engineers willing to endure crappy working conditions, abusively long hours, and lower pay then what's standard in order to get a green card and stay here.

Ironically, those who endured these conditions long enough to acquire a green card now have a real problem in this recession. Once they've been dumped out onto the street as so many corporations have shed workers, they're now competing against their own countrymen and other foreigners who don't have green cards yet and are willing to tolerate the abuse that green-card holders thought they no longer had to endure anymore.

Even more intriguing, a green-card holder who loses his job can't file for unemployment benefits. If he doesn't have a job, then he has no reason to be here and needs to go home - at least, that's what the unemployment office tells them. I don't know anyone deported for filing for benefits, but most green card holders are plenty scared so they don't file.

I say, become a citizen or go back home, but quit whining about how the American teat won't give you as much milk as you want, and how they somehow owe you something more for all your labor. You got paid. That's what they owed you. If you allow yourself to be abused, you make it harder on all the rest of us who now have to take abuse too, so you won't be getting any more sympathy from me over it. Become a citizen, vote, and then you can compete against foreign H1B visa immigrants like the rest of us, and know that though you won't be deported for being unemployed, you're unemployed because a foreign worker has your job and will take the crap you thought you didn't have to take anymore because you can't be deported.
